The narrative of the eventful life of Oliver Wendell Holmes (1841-1935) starts with his childhood in Boston. It follows his involvement with the abolitionist movement, his valiant service during the Civil War, the publication of his landmark book The Common Law, his tenure on the Harvard Law School faculty, and his judgeship in Massachusetts's Supreme Court. White focuses on Holmes' remarkable 30-year service as a Supreme Court Justice, and details key cases, such Schenck v. United States, in which he outlined the "clear and present danger" test for freedom of speech.

Those vibrant, independent women continue to haunt the imagination, although Hawthorne often punishes, humiliates, or kills them, as if exorcising that which enthralls.
